Withdraw or Leave

Withdrawing or Leaving the University of Tennessee

We’re sorry to hear you’re considering no longer attending the University of Tennessee and we’re here to help you determine how to take your next steps.

Withdrawing v. Leaving

See the questions below to determine if you are considered to be “withdrawing from” or “leaving” the university.

Do you plan to complete the term?

If you plan to complete your term and earn final grades here at UT, this is not considered withdrawing from the university. Read more about the process of leaving the university below.

Leaving the university

Will you not complete the term?

If you need to drop your classes after the term begins, this is considered withdrawing from the university. We encourage you to reach out to One Stop or contact your academic advisor to make sure you understand the financial and academic impact from withdrawing. Learn more about the process of withdrawing from the university below.

Withdrawing from the university

Leaving the University

If you plan to complete the current term and earn final grades, this is considered leaving the university – not withdrawing from the university.

If you are not continuously enrolled, your financial aid may be affected. Please contact One Stop for more information.

Please use MyUTK to officially notify UT of your intent to leave. Instructions for different student types are listed below.

If your leave from the university is due to a co-op opportunity arranged through the Office of Engineering Professional Practice or the Center for Career Development and Academic Exploration or an opportunity arranged through the Programs Abroad Office, you do not need to submit the leave notification.

New Undergraduate Students

Admitted students who no longer wish to attend UT should visit the Go Vols Portal to officially decline their offer of admission. By officially declining admission, all financial aid awards, housing options, and other program opportunities will be withdrawn.

Please contact your admissions counselor for more information.

Withdrawing from the University

We encourage you to contact your academic advisor to make sure you understand the financial and academic impact of withdrawing from the university. If you need to drop all your classes after the semester begins, this is considered withdrawing. You may drop any and all classes prior to the start of the semester, but after the semester begins, you must officially withdraw from the university to drop all of your classes.

Withdrawing from the university is likely to affect you financially and academically, but it will not affect your GPA. Contact One Stop to learn more.

Steps to Withdraw:

  1. Visit your MyUTK account.
  2. Choose “Banner Self-Service Home” under the “My Resources” menu.
  3. Choose “Student.”
  4. Choose “Registration.”
  5. Choose “Request to Withdraw and Submit.”

Withdrawing in Summer

First Session

If you finished the first session of Summer Term and received your grades, you must follow the policy for dropping the rest of your enrolled courses instead of withdrawing from the term completely.

If you finished the first session and you have not received grades yet, you must withdraw before the last class day of the session.

Full Term or Second Session

If you are enrolled in the full Summer Term or only its second session and you want to withdraw, you should apply to withdraw from the Summer Term.

If you are called to active duty, please contact the Veterans Success Center.

Returning to the University

If you withdraw from the university, you must apply for readmission. This does not apply to withdrawal from Mini-Terms and Summer Terms.

If readmission is granted, you will be unable to totally withdraw from the university again. All earned grades will remain.

Undergraduates

Apply for readmission through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions if you withdraw from the Fall or Spring semester. Learn more on the Undergraduate Admissions website.

Note: After three total withdrawals from the university, you must sit out for both a Fall and Spring semester. After sitting out, you may apply for readmission. If readmission is granted, no additional total withdrawals will be allowed and earned grades will stand for all future terms.

Graduate Admissions

Apply for readmission through the Office of Graduate Admissions if you withdraw from the Fall or Spring semester. Learn more on the Graduate School website.

Law School Students

Please contact the Student Records Office in the College of Law.

Veterinary Medicine Students

Please contact the Dean’s Office in the College of Veterinary Medicine on the Agriculture Campus.

Impacts of Withdrawing from the University

Charges

If you leave the university during a term without completing the withdrawal process, you will be charged for the entire term. The effective date you withdraw affects certain charges, fees, and some financial aid programs because they are assessed on a percentage basis.

View Charges

Refunds

Please contact a One Stop counselor to find out if you are eligible for any return of tuition or fees.

Financial Aid

If you received any financial aid or scholarships, please contact a One Stop counselor before withdrawing.

All or a portion of your financial aid may require repayment, depending on your withdrawal date. You must repay financial aid at once if you withdraw during the federal refund period.

Withdrawing from UT does not cancel any fees and charges you already incurred. UT follows federal policy and procedures for calculating the return of Title IV funds for financial aid.

If you withdraw from UT two or more times while receiving financial aid, you are no longer eligible to receive it.

Transcripts

Undergraduates: If you withdraw from UT by the Withdraw with no Ws deadline, you will have the notation “withdrawn” and the date on your permanent academic record. If you withdraw after that, you will receive W grades in your classes. A total withdrawal does not impact your six allotted “course drops with a W” over your undergraduate career.

Graduate Students: If you withdraw from UT by the Withdraw with no Ws deadline, you will have the notation “withdrawn” and the date on your permanent academic record. If you withdraw between that deadline and the Drop with Ws deadline, you will receive W grades in your classes.
