Find Your Cost of Attendance
Cost of attendance is not your bill, its an annual estimate used for financial aid planning. It includes charges that may appear on your UT account as well as estimated expenses such as housing, food, books, transportation, and personal needs.
What Impacts Cost of Attendance?
Some contributing factors:
- The UT Board of Trustees sets official tuition and fee rates in June or July each year. Any changes to tuition and fee rates go into effect each fall.
- The UT administration submits tuition and fee recommendations to the board as part of the budgeting process.
- Additional per-credit-hour fees may be assessed depending on what you are studying. For instance, courses in business, engineering, architecture, and nursing have added fees.
- Estimated additional expenses (costs not set by UT) can vary based on your personal spending and needs.

Are You In-State or Out-of-State?
Your residency classification determines whether you are charged in-state or out-of-state tuition. UT reviews residency with information provided on your admissions application based on regulations established by the state of Tennessee and the UT System.
Financial Aid Budget
Your Cost of Attendance (COA) is an annual estimate of what it may cost you to attend UT, including tuition and fees as well as estimated expenses like housing, food, books, transportation, and personal needs. It is not your bill, it’s just an estimate.
Your Financial Aid Budget is used to determine how much financial aid you are eligible to receive. Your total financial aid, including grants, scholarships, and loans, generally cannot exceed your Cost of Attendance.
What Happens if You Receive an Additional Scholarship?
Receiving a new departmental or external scholarship does not always mean you will receive additional refund funds. If your total Financial Aid has already reached your allowable Financial Aid Budget, your aid package may need to be adjusted when the new scholarship is added.
When possible, the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships may replace a less favorable source of aid, such as student loans, with the new scholarship.
Tuition Cap
A tuition cap is the practice of charging the same amount for a range of credit hours during a semester. A tuition cap applies to base tuition, but not all fees.
Discounts & Waivers
You may be able to take advantage of discounts and waivers available through UT and the state of Tennessee. Keep in mind that waivers may not cover all charges.
