Tuition Cap

Tuition Cap

A tuition cap is the practice of charging the same amount for a range of credit hours during a semester at UT Knoxville.

Undergraduate Tuition Caps

Undergraduate students who take 12 or more credit hours at UT during a semester are charged a flat rate of $5,666 for tuition.

Any credit hours taken elsewhere during the semester will not count towards the total credit hour mark. Students will be charged at the normal per-credit-hour rate at each location. Students enrolled in Summer courses are charged the per-credit-hour rate; there is no tuition cap for courses taken during the Summer term.

Some fees that are based on credit hours may not be affected by the tuition cap. These include:

  • Mandatory Fees – Reaches maximum levels at 9 credit hours.
  • Library Fee – Reaches maximum levels at 8 credit hours.

Note: Undergraduate students enrolled in Engineering, Business (except 500, and 600 level), Nursing, Architecture and Design courses will be charged a differential per-credit-hour rate. Differential tuition is not included in the tuition cap calculation.
